Developing Culturally Safe Services in Mainstream Organizations
A workshop that will provide an overview of the story of the AFCC and Alpha House Sweat Lodge collaboration which was initiated in 2009. The presentation includes reflections from our work together and will show how the opportunity to access ceremony, prayer and Sweat Lodge practices has contributed to a deeper and more respectful relationship among and between clients, staff and organizations.
The workshop will also present the outcomes from our 2013 study “Understanding Cultural Safety: Traditional and Client Perspectives (Bird, Thurston, Oelke, Turner, Christiansen, Fisher and Ewenin, 2013). The goal of the research and outcomes will be presented including a Theoretical Framework for building cultural safety in mainstream organizations along with 6 common understandings of Cultural Safety among clients, former clients, Elders and staff
